Cherry eye is a prolapse of the third eyelid gland that can appear rapidly in young dogs. Learn why it happens and how repair supports lifelong comfort.

Cause

The third eyelid gland can move forward when its supporting tissues are naturally looser. The exposed gland becomes irritated and produces more discharge which is uncomfortable for pets.

  • Breed related tissue laxity
  • Common in young dogs
  • Exposure increases irritation
  • Second eye can become involved

Early Signs

Short bursts of redness and tearing often occur before a full prolapse. These clues guide a timely and comfortable repair.

  • Pink swelling that appears and recedes
  • Clear or mucous discharge
  • Intermittent squinting
  • Recurrent conjunctivitis

Repair and Recovery

We stabilize the gland with a pocket style procedure to maintain normal tear production. After care includes an e collar, eye drops, and a recheck exam.
