We are seeking an experienced assistant who enjoys hands-on patient care and is comfortable working in a busy small animal veterinary clinic. Veterinary Assistant Duties & Responsibilities
The Veterinary Assistant will support the veterinarian, assist with patient care, and help maintain efficient clinical workflows.
- Assist with veterinary appointments under veterinarian supervision.
- Obtain patient histories and communicate with pet owners.
- Assist with preventive care, vaccinations, nail trims, and anal gland expressions.
- Prepare patients and equipment for anesthetic procedures.
- Monitor anesthetized patients according to veterinarian direction and clinic protocols.
- Perform safe canine and feline restraint.
- Place IV catheters and perform venipuncture within permitted scope and under appropriate supervision.
- Administer medications and treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
- Perform IDEXX in-house laboratory testing.
- Maintain accurate veterinary medical records.
- Prepare examination rooms, treatment areas, dental stations, and surgical spaces.
- Clean, organize, and maintain clinical instruments and equipment.
- Assist with anesthetic recovery and patient monitoring.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient treatment area.
Veterinary Assistant Qualifications & Experience
This position is intended for an experienced Veterinary Assistant. Previous practical experience in a veterinary hospital or veterinary clinic is required.
- Previous hands-on veterinary assistant experience.
- Ability to support appointments with limited supervision.
- Experience with veterinary anesthesia monitoring.
- Strong canine and feline restraint skills.
- Experience placing IV catheters.
- Experience performing venipuncture and blood collection.
- Familiarity with in-house veterinary laboratory equipment.
- IDEXX laboratory experience preferred.
- Clear and professional client communication.
- Ability to remain organized in a busy clinical setting.
- Ability to safely lift approximately 40 pounds.
- Commitment to compassionate and ethical animal care.
A Washington veterinary technician license is not required for this Veterinary Assistant position.
Anesthesia Monitoring & Surgical Support
Anesthesia experience is particularly important for this opening. We are looking for applicants who are comfortable preparing patients for anesthetic procedures and assisting with anesthetic monitoring under veterinarian supervision.
Candidates with experience in dental procedures, surgical preparation, IV catheter placement, venipuncture, anesthesia monitoring, and post-anesthetic recovery are strongly encouraged to apply.
